Gayathri Raguramm is an Indian choreographer and actress who has worked in the South Indian film industry. The daughter of the choreographer Raghuram, Gayathri began her career as an actress in the 2002 film Charlie Chaplin and after a career break, she began working as a choreographer in films during 2008.
Career[edit]
Gayathri Raghuram started acting at fourteen.[1] Early in her career, she insisted on being known by her full name to avoid confusion with another actress, Gayatri Jayaraman, who was also active in the period.[2] Her debut film, Sakthi Chidambaram's comedy drama Charlie Chaplin (2002), featured her in an ensemble cast alongside Prabhu Deva, Prabhu and Abhirami. She was selected for the film after Gayatri Jayaraman opted out of the project.[3] The film enjoyed commercial success, with a critic from The Hindu stating 'the new heroine's expertise in dance is particularly impressive'.[4] In 2002, she appeared in three more films: the Kannada film Manasella Neene directed by choreographer Sundaram, the Tamil film Style alongside choreographer Raghava Lawrence and the Malayalam film, Nakshathrakkannulla Rajakumaran Avanundoru Rajakumari, where she starred opposite Prithviraj. Her four consequent releases in 2003 fared less well at the box office and failed to garner her more film offers. In concern of her performance in the horror film Whistle (2003), a critic from The Hindu wrote 'Gayathri Raghuram's face is and her expressions are just right but rotundity seems to come in the way of wholesome appeal'.[5] Likewise, a critic wrote 'Gayathri, as the garrulous friend of the hero, begins well, and even when you think she might have a solid role to play, she turns out to be just another weighty heroine in tow', in regard of her appearance in the Arjun-starrer Parasuram (2003).[6] Subsequently, she quit films and relocated to pursue a qualification in Visual Communications in Iowa, USA.[7]
Gayathri returned to the film industry in 2008 as a choreographer with films like Jayam Kondaan (2008) and Poi Solla Porom (2008) and has since worked in big budget productions including Madrasapattinam (2010), Deiva Thirumagal (2013), Osthe (2011) and Anjaan (2014).[1][8] Her work in the crime thriller Kanthaswamy (2009) and the satire Tamil Padam (2010) were well received by critics.[9] By 2014, she had choreographed around 100 films and has regularly specialised in working on romantic montages.[1]
Gayatri acted once more in Vai Raja Vai (2015) at the insistence of her friend Aishwarya Dhanush by portraying the sister of the film's lead character Gautham Karthik.[1] Likewise, she made an extended guest appearance in director Bala's village drama Tharai Thappattai (2016), where she also featured in a karakattam-based song. After announcing her intentions of directing a film in 2012, she began work on her first directorial venture Yaadhumagi Nindraai during 2016.[10][11]
In 2017, Gayathri was a contestant on the Tamil reality show Bigg Boss hosted by Kamal Haasan.[12] She was evicted from the show on day 56, after having attracted widespread criticism for her behaviour inside the Bigg Boss House. In particular, her constant harassment and bullying of contestants Bharani, Julie and then Oviya were widely criticised. A police complaint was filed against her for using derogatory words and hurting the sentiment of others, while on the show.[13][14] Post her appearance on the show, Gayathri returned to choreography, and also appeared as a judge on the television show, Mrs Chinnathirai.[15]
Personal life[edit]
Gayathri was born as the second daughter to dance choreographers Raghuram and Girija Raghuram.[16] Her elder sister Suja is a prominent dancer, who has also previously worked as an actress.[17] She is the great grand-daughter of director Krishnaswami Subrahmanyam. Her mother, Girija comes from a family of choreographers, which includes Brinda and Kala.[18] In August 2006, Gayathri had an arranged marriage with US-based software engineer Deepak Chandrasekar in California, and the pair subsequently held a Hindu ceremony in December 2006 which was attended by several actors and politicians from Tamil Nadu. In 2008, Gayathri filed for divorce on the grounds of domestic abuse from Deepak and his parents. The divorce was subsequently granted in 2010.[19]
In November 2015, Gayathri was appointed as Bharatiya Janata Party's secretary for arts in Tamil Nadu. She had earlier joined the party in 2014 in the presence of BJP president Amit Shah.

Gayathri Tv Serial Actress BiographyGayatri Jayaraman was born on 27 September 1984 to Jayaraman, an auditor, and Chitra, a housewife. She was educated at Adarsh Vidyalaya and then Church Park in Mumbai. Gayatri grew up in Shahabad near Gulbarga till she was four years old before her family headed to Madras. She spent a year in Bangalore when in her eighth standard and this helped her pick up Kannada. Gayatri initially wanted to pursue a career in medicine and despite getting 94 percent in board exams, she did not get a medical seat, and hence began reading a B.Sc in Life Science at IGNOU. Gayatri balanced her time between modeling and education and thus also went on to study physiotherapy at SRM College in Chennai. About her decision to simultaneously pursue qualifications she revealed that 'the average life of an actress on screen is maximum four years' and that 'she can always return to physiotherapy once my career as an actress is over'.
She took up her first modelling assignments for Nailli Silks, followed by Kumaran Silks, Pothys and Chennai Silks while also participating in the beauty pageants, winning the Miss Tamil Nadu title in October, 1997 and Miss South India title in 1998. She entered the final stages of Femina Miss India 2000, after being selected among the 26 finalists from 8000 entries and made it through to the final 5, eventually finishing fourth. She has also been a video jockey on television, having appeared for Fanta 'Illimai Pudhumai' on Sun TV and 'Telephone Manipol' on Vijay TV.
Gayathri started her career as an actress with director K. Balachander's tele-serial Azhukku Veshti and rejected offers from promienent directors such as Arjun before she decided to make her debut by featuring in Nagabharana's Neela. Neela, a Kannada film about a tibal singer with cancer, won critical acclaim at the box office and was selected as one of the thirty-two Indian films to feature at the International Film Festival of India. Gayatri won a Cinema Express Award for her performance, with a critic describing it as a 'matured performance gives an impression of her being an experienced actress'. She made her Tamil film debut after being approached by producer KRG to feature in his Manadhai Thirudivittai opposite Prabhu Deva. Gayatri, post-release, remarked that her role in the film was changed, with Kausalya playing the role that she had signed on to portray. The film became a commercial failure, although her appearance in the song 'Manjakattu Mynaa' got her noticed.
Her Telugu film debut was with Srikanth in Aaduthu Paaduthu. before she also went on to feature in a supporting role in Shree alongside Suriya, with Gayatri revealing that her role was chopped by the editors in post-production. She featured in another small role in Vaseegara alongside Vijay and Sneha, before going on to feature in a series of unsuccessful Kannada and Malayalam films.
She retired from films after her marriage and is now a certified scuba diving instructor in the Andaman Islands and briefly returned to compere the Chennai Super Kings Cheer Leaders talent show on Vijay TV in 2009.
In May 2007 she married Samit Sawhny, an Indian entrepreneur and author, in the Andaman Islands in a small and private wedding function.
